Poor weight management among individuals in developed countries has grown to near epidemic proportions. Conservative estimates suggest that one third to one half of all Americans, and at least as many in the United Kingdom are overweight. Why are we so fat?
Human biochemistry can, at times, appear to be hopelessly complex. If it were not so, the solution to many health problems associated with excess body weight would have been solved long ago. On the individual level, however, the matter can be greatly simplified. With the exception of some isolated cases, being overweight is the result of not getting enough exercise and eating too much. The behavior underlying the unwillingness to exercise and the excessive consumption of food, on the other hand, is a matter not quite so simple.
There are numerous factors that contribute to weight management. Some of the most important include how to assess your weight, understanding what contributes to body weight, and some of the choices that are available to you to manage your weight, with respect to overall health.
